Project Reflection

This type of independent research project is a very different style of learning from the more traditional style in which the class had previously learned. As such, the new style has some positive qualities, as well as a few problems.
This was the first time I have learned in this style, and I am happy to have had this experience so that I am prepared for similar projects in the future. Knowing how to do this type of work may help for other classes and possibly in college. It has also forced me to learn how to use online tools which I otherwise may never have used. Finally, because of the amount of research that had to be done, I think that the information I have covered will stick with me for a longer time.
There were negative points to this learning style, however. The lack of a more strict time frame and clear rubric for the project has caused trouble for me and other students. The amount of work we have had to do has conflicted with our work in other classes, and as a result many students have struggled to balance their grades. We also do not have as many opportunities to discuss what we have learned as a class.
I think that the traditional style of learning is easiest for the class, although there is a risk that students may not get as much information by learning that way. If this new style is improved and broken down into more manageable pieces, with more clear expectations and due dates, as well as occasional class discussions, it may be a very effective way to learn.
